Squamous cell carcinoma

A malignant tumour of the skin and mucous membranes. In white cats it typically affects the ears and nose and is linked to sun exposure. In dogs it also appears in the mouth and on the toes.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Sores or scabs that will not heal on the ears, nose or lips
  • • In white cats: lesions on the tips of the ears
  • • Lumps or ulcers in the mouth or on the toes
  • • Bleeding from the lesions
  • • Slow but progressive growth

Causes

A malignant tumour promoted by sun exposure (areas of pale, thinly haired skin). White cats are especially prone to it on the ears and nose.

Diagnosis

Biopsy of the lesion to confirm. Staging tests depending on the case.

Treatment

Surgery to remove the tumour (in cats the affected ear tips are sometimes amputated). Depending on the location, radiotherapy may be added. Early detection is key.

Prevention

Protect pale-skinned animals from the sun, provide shade, and monitor the ears and nose in white cats.

See your vet if there is a sore or scab that will not heal on the ear, nose or mouth, especially in white cats.
