Causes
Repeated pressure of the bone against a hard surface when lying down. Large and giant breeds, and dogs with limited mobility, are the most affected.
Diagnosis
Visual diagnosis. The vet assesses whether there is an infection or a hygroma that requires treatment.
Treatment
Padded, orthopaedic beds to spread the pressure. If there is a hygroma or infection: drainage, wound care and sometimes surgery. Prevention is easier than cure.
Prevention
Soft, orthopaedic beds, avoiding hard floors, weight control and encouraging movement.
