Feline calicivirus

A feline respiratory virus that is part of cat flu. It is characterised by mouth ulcers. Highly contagious between cats.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Ulcers on the tongue, gums and palate (very characteristic)
  • Sneezing and nasal discharge
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Drooling and pain when eating
  • Fever and lethargy
  • Some strains cause lameness or more severe illness

Causes

Feline calicivirus, highly contagious through secretions. Common in young cats, colonies and shelters. The virus is resistant in the environment.

Diagnosis

Clinical signs (the mouth ulcers are a strong pointer) plus specific tests in complicated cases.

Treatment

Supportive care: hydration, pain relief, palatable soft food, cleaning the eyes and nose. Isolate from other cats.

Prevention

VACCINATION (it is part of the feline core trivalent vaccine), hygiene, reducing overcrowding.

See the vet if your cat is drooling, has mouth ulcers or stops eating (dangerous in cats).
