Causes
Persistent inflammation of the airways, often of undetermined cause. Smoke, being overweight and irritants make it worse.
Diagnosis
Chest X-rays, and sometimes a bronchoalveolar lavage to rule out other causes.
Treatment
Lifelong management: anti-inflammatories (sometimes inhaled), bronchodilators, weight control, a smoke-free environment. It is controlled, not cured.
Prevention
A smoke-free environment, weight control, using a harness instead of a collar.
