Causes
Infections (viral or bacterial), inhaled irritants (smoke, dust), allergies. It is usually self-limiting.
Diagnosis
Auscultation and clinical signs. If it persists, X-rays to rule out other causes.
Treatment
Rest, a smoke-free environment, hydration. The vet will assess whether a cough suppressant or antibiotic is needed. Most cases improve within 1-2 weeks.
Prevention
A smoke-free environment, avoiding irritants, vaccination.
