Causes
The protozoan Babesia, transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. The parasite invades and destroys red blood cells.
Diagnosis
Blood test: identification of the parasite within the red blood cells and/or PCR. It also detects the anaemia.
Treatment
Specific antiparasitic drugs. In severe cases with marked anaemia, a transfusion and hospitalisation may be needed.
Prevention
Strict tick control with an effective antiparasitic product, and checking the dog after walks in the countryside.
