A tick-borne disease in which the parasite destroys red blood cells, causing anaemia. It can be serious.
This may be a veterinary emergency
URGENT if there is lethargy, pale gums and dark urine, especially after a tick bite. The anaemia can worsen quickly.
The protozoan Babesia, transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. The parasite invades and destroys red blood cells.
Blood test: identification of the parasite within the red blood cells and/or PCR. It also detects the anaemia.
Specific antiparasitic drugs. In severe cases with marked anaemia, a transfusion and hospitalisation may be needed.
Strict tick control with an effective antiparasitic product, and checking the dog after walks in the countryside.
