Sistema nervioso

Ataxia (loss of coordination)

A lack of coordination of movements. It is a sign, not a disease: it points to a problem in the nervous system or with balance.

Moderate🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

Symptoms to watch for

  • Wobbly, "drunken" walking
  • Exaggerated steps or misjudging distances
  • Falling over, difficulty turning
  • Possible head tilt or tremors
  • Depending on the cause, other neurological signs

Causes

Many possible causes: balance problems (ear/cerebellum), spinal cord problems, poisoning, brain disease, metabolic disturbances.

Diagnosis

Neurological examination to localise the origin + tests according to the suspected cause (blood work, MRI, cerebrospinal fluid analysis).

Treatment

Depends entirely on the cause. Identifying the origin is the key step.

Prevention

Depends on the underlying cause.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your pet is moving in an uncoordinated or "drunken" way. If it comes on suddenly, have it assessed promptly: it could be anything from something mild to poisoning.

WetAi guides you and takes you to the vet; it does not diagnose.
