Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD)

An allergic reaction to flea saliva. It is the most common cause of itching in dogs and cats. A single bite can trigger an intense flare-up in sensitised animals.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Intense itching, especially at the base of the tail and along the back
  • • Hair loss over the rump, thighs and base of the tail
  • • Small crusts (miliary dermatitis in cats)
  • • Sores from scratching and licking
  • • Presence of fleas or flea dirt (tiny black specks)

Causes

Hypersensitivity to proteins in flea saliva. It does not depend on the number of fleas: an allergic animal reacts to a single bite.

Diagnosis

Clinical examination + the typical distribution of the lesions + the presence of fleas. The vet rules out other allergies.

Treatment

Strict flea control on the animal AND in the environment (95% of fleas live in the home, not on the animal). A good-quality monthly parasite treatment. Management of the itching following the vet's regimen.

Prevention

External parasite control ALL year round (not just in summer). Treat every animal in the household. Wash bedding at 60°C and vacuum frequently.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your pet persistently scratches the back or tail area. Confirm that the parasite treatment you are using is effective.
