A build-up of greasy material in the follicles of the cat's chin, similar to human acne. Common and usually mild.
Excess oil production, poor chin hygiene, plastic food bowls (which harbour bacteria), stress, allergies.
Visual examination. The vet will rule out infection, fungi or mites if the case is severe.
Mild cases: gentle cleaning of the chin, and swapping the plastic bowl for ceramic or steel. Infected cases: topical or oral treatment as directed by the vet.
Ceramic or stainless steel bowls (not plastic), washing them daily, and good chin hygiene.
See your vet if the chin becomes swollen, painful or develops pus-filled pimples. Mild cases with just blackheads usually need no treatment.
