History and origin
A very ancient breed native to Andalusia. It worked with shepherds in the mountains, fishermen on the coast and hunters in the marshes. Recognised by the FCI in 1985.
Recognised by the FCI within group 9 (companion dogs). Its small size makes flat living easier, but "small" is not a synonym for "needs no training": small dog syndrome (excessive barking, fearfulness, reactivity) is common when the same routine as a large dog is not applied.
Temperament and character
Intelligent, loyal, cheerful. A deep bond with its family. Learns quickly. Sociable. Hard-working. It needs daily mental stimulation — scent games, food Kongs and short trick sessions channel its energy better than physical exercise alone. It responds best to positive reinforcement: physical punishment breeds fear, anxiety and reactivity — coercive methods are NOT recommended by veterinary behaviourists. Sensitive to its family's mood: it picks up on tension and catches it.

Children: excellent. Other dogs: sociable. Cats: good with socialisation.
