History and origin
Originating from the border between Scotland and England (border), bred for centuries to herd sheep. The Border's "eye" is legendary: it hypnotises sheep with its gaze. In the 20th century it became a star of agility and obedience.
Temperament and character
World's number 1 in intelligence. Extremely high energy. Intense herding instinct (it may herd children, bikes, cars — dangerous). Sensitive and intensely bonded to its person. Without stimulation it develops stereotypies.
Living together
Children: yes, with respect and training. But the herding instinct may lead it to "control" children by chasing them. Other dogs: sociable. Cats: it depends.

High-performance food (≥25% protein) split into 2 meals. Adjust the ration to its real activity level: a sporting Border burns a lot, while a flat-bound one puts on weight quickly. Training treats deducted from the daily ration.
✂️ Grooming
Medium-length double coat. Brushing 3-4 times a week (daily during the two seasonal moults). No clipping required. Bathe only when dirty. Check ears and pads after exercise in the field.
🎓 Training
The easiest dog in the world to train (Coren's number 1): it learns commands in a few repetitions. Positive reinforcement and short, varied sessions. Channel its herding instinct with disc, agility or treibball; without a job, it invents its own tasks (controlling children, cars).
🏃 Exercise
At least 2-3 hours daily combining physical and mental exercise. Puppy: avoid jumps and long runs until growth is complete. Adult: canine sport, herding, tracking. Senior: keep the mind active even as physical intensity decreases.
