Pheasant/galliforme feed (maintenance, with more protein during breeding/moult), grain (maize, wheat), vegetables, some fruit and insects. Grit for grinding and calcium for hens.

It does not need grooming; it needs a sand bath and a dry, clean aviary to keep its plumage in good condition and control external parasites.

It is neither trainable nor a handling bird: it is an ornamental, elusive, flighty bird. 'Handling' is about the setup (safe captures, separating territorial males, protecting from predators).

It needs a spacious aviary where it can run, scratch and take refuge in vegetation; it is not a cage or flat bird. The male is territorial.
