History and origin

A finch native to the Canary Islands, domesticated since the 15th century; selectively bred over centuries for its song and colour, and a classic host of Macrorhabdus.

Temperament and character

Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.

Living together

Children: depends on the species + individual temperament. **Other birds:** better in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.

Life stages of the Canario Común

Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-15 años.

Chick

0-1.5 months

Reared by the parents, egg food, feather growth

Juvenile

1.5-12 months

First moult, song development (males), varied diet

Adult

1-8 years

Annual moult, song/breeding, prevention of mites and megabacteriosis

Senior

8-15 years

Liver monitoring, feather cysts, joints

Care

Cage: at least double the size of the bird with its wings outstretched. A dedicated room is better.

Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.

Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.

Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.

Care in detail

🍽️ Nutrition

Canary seed alone is not enough: offer a quality seed mix supplemented with fresh vegetables and a vitamin supplement. Clean water always available.

✂️ Grooming

No brushing needed. Provide a bath tub so it can groom itself, check nails and beak, and keep the cage clean to prevent fungus and mites.

🎓 Training

It is not trained like a parrot, but it becomes used to human presence with calm and routine. The male sings naturally; disturbances or frequent stress will silence its song.

🏃 Exercise

It needs a spacious cage to fly from perch to perch and, if possible, time to fly in a safe room. Unlike other birds, it does not require a mandatory partner.

Breed-specific health

Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-15 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will share your entire adult life with it.

🩺 Health predispositions of this breed

Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
